Graphing Lines and Systems

Graphs are commonly used in professional settings to display data.  Think about your major or profession.  When would you use a linear graph or a system of equations? In your response include the following:What type of data can be used for the graph? How would you identify and label the axes? How would you calculate the slope of the line? How would you interpret the line and data?Review your peers’ graph applications and provide comments.  Extend the discussion by providing additional ways graphs can be used and applied in professional settings.

The Foundation of Data-Driven Decisions

Course: MAT210 – Data-Driven Decision MakingWeek 3 Assignment 1: The Foundation of Data-Driven DecisionsDue: Week 3Points: 85Skill(s) Being Assessed: Problem Solving – Data Analysis (Mathematical Reasoning)What to Submit / Deliverables: Word Document uploaded to the Blackboard AssignmentWhat is the value of doing this assignment? You’ll practice your problem solving skill by identifying foundational statistical concepts and explaining how data-driven decision making can help inform real world problems. This will provide you with a solid foundation that will help you to not only be successful in this course, but to learn to make smarter, data-driven decisions in your personal and professional life.Your goal for this assignment is to: Practice your problem solving skill by answering questions about statistical concepts and the benefits and uses of data-driven decision making.Steps to Complete:STEP 1: Answer the questions below in a Word document.STEP 2: Save and submit your Word document in the Assignment link in the Week 3 Submit page in BlackBoard.1. Explain the difference between descriptive and inferential statistical methods and give an example of how each could help you draw a conclusion in the real world.2. You would like to determine whether eating before bed influences sleep patterns. List each step you would take to conduct a statistical study on this topic and explain what you would do to complete each step. Then, answer the questions below. What is your hypothesis on this issue? What type of data will you be looking for? What methods would you use to gather information? How would the results of the data influence decisions you might make about eating and sleeping?3. A company that sells tea and coffee claims that drinking two cups of green tea daily has been shown to increase mood and well-being. This claim is based on surveys asking customers to rate their mood on a scale of 1–10 after days they drink/do not drink different types of tea. Based on this information, answer the following questions:How would we know if this data is valid and reliable? What questions would you ask to find out more about the quality of the data? Why is it important to gather and report valid and reliable data?4. Identify two examples of real world problems that you have observed in your personal, academic, or professional life that could benefit from data driven solutions. Explain how you would use data/statistics and the steps you would take to analyze each problem. You may also choose topics below (or examples from the weekly content) to help support your response:Productivity at work.Financial decisions and budgeting.Health and nutrition.Political campaigns.Quality testing in products.Human resource policies.Algorithms for programming/coding.Accounting & financial policies.Crime reduction and trends.Environmental protection / Emergency preparedness.5. How does analyzing data on these real world problems aid in problem solving and drawing conclusions? Be sure to note the value and benefits of data-driven decision making.Grading for this assignment will be based on the following rubricfound here:By submitting this paper, you agree: (1) that you are submitting your paper to be used and stored as part of the SafeAssign™ services in accordance with the Blackboard Privacy Policy; (2) that your institution may use your paper in accordance with your institution’s policies; and (3) that your use of SafeAssign will be without recourse against Blackboard Inc. and its affiliates.

Unit 5 Assessment – Calculating Confidence Intervals

Open the Heart Rate Dataset in Excel and identify the quantitative variablesMake sure the data is sorted by category (e.g.male-at-rest, female at-rest, etc.)Use the Data Analysis tools of Excel to construct 95% and 99% confidence intervals for all 8 categories of the sorted quantitative variables.  Excel will calculate the margin of error given as the “confidence interval” in the output. Use this margin of error to create your 8 confidence intervals by both adding and subtracting it from the sample mean (calculated in unit 3).  This creates a range of values that is the confidence interval.Create a Word document, and use your calculated results to explain what the confidence intervals tell us. What do these confidence intervals tell us about our heart rate data?  How would you interpret the 95% and 99% intervals for resting heart rate?Compare the 99% and 95% intervals and explain why one is larger than the other even though we use the same sample mean value.

The simplest error detection scheme used in data communication is parity-checking. Usually messages sent consist of characters, each character consists of a number of bits (a bit is the smallest unit of information and is either 1 or 0). In parity-checking, a 1 or 0 is appended to the end of each character at the transmitter to make the total number of 1’s even. The receiver checks the number of 1’s in every character received, and if the result is odd it signals an error. Suppose that each bit is received correctly with probabaility 0.999, independently of other bits. What is the probability that a 7-bit character is received in error, but the error is not detected by the parity check?
