1. History of Juvenile Justice
The separation of the justice systems of adults and children is not as old as many assume. The separation was not however done at once; it has been a process which is still being determined up to now. The determination is usually for different reasons and at different places. The one thing that I found interesting is the fact that a child was not being determined by the years but rather by their understanding and their knowledge. Children under the age of seven were ruled as incapable of committing any crime. Children between the ages of seven and fourteen were presumed to be capable of crime. The reasoning used was that if the child had the capabilities to understand what is right and what was wrong. This is the concept of malicious supplies of age (Mendiola-Washington, & Emeka, 2014).
It is also quite catchy that there was an emphasis for punishment rather than rehabilitation during the beginning of the juvenile justice. Children who were found guilty could even be given the death sentence. In any case the children even if they were being tried as adults they were not being accorded their due process rights including being informed of their charges as well as given a chance to question their witnesses. In my opinion it was chaotic as it was very disadvantageous on the accused children especially in their status of being vulnerable.
2. Juvenile justice
Juvenile justice is still being sought out even today; it is interesting that the constitutional rights of the children in the courts were not recognized until late 1960s and 1970s. The intriguing thing to note is that the family did not have a say in the delinquents being forcibly taken by the state and subjecting them to intervention. The 1838 case Ex parte Crouse provided that the Bill of rights was not applicable to the youths. It further provided that education which was of public interest is the one that gave the state the right to intervene without due regards to the parents or the delinquents family members (Kurlychek, 2014).
With time though changes have been seen in the society where that doctrine was challenged and which gave a new approach to the youth’s criminality. The protection of their rights through the adversarial system was a way which was aimed at protecting the children’s constitutional rights. The current juvenile justice system believes in the due process, retribution and rehabilitation of the youth rather than forceful intervention and punishment.
3. Youth Gangs
Youth gangs come about due to different reasons including poverty and peer influence. Youth gangs control efforts often are not successful due to the different strategies that the gangs develop in their bid to survive the hunting down. Ii is intriguing to know that there are different types of youth gangs with youth street gang being one of them and the most dangerous. They usually form an organizational structure whose membership makes the members have a sense of belonging. Accordingly some scholars have gone ahead and described gangs as “ a unique form but one of many kinds of armed groups that occupy the uncontrolled spaces of a ‘world of slums’. Some of the reasons why many youths end up joining gang groups include looking for other means that they can be someone after unsuccessful capital searching (Taylor, 2013). This leads to deprivation which makes them end up engaging in anti-social behaviors.
These groups have proven to be difficult in controlling despite numerous research being conducted over the years. The differences in their structures, behaviors and membership is what causes confusion. The one and probably most effective way would be to study a particular type of a gang and how it operates.

Leading change is an essential part of any leadership role. Organizations are rarely static; instead, they are almost certainly in some phase of change at any given time. One of the most important steps to leading change is transparency through communication (Mollica, n.d.). An innovation leader is a tough job, but being flexible and developing a culture that allows for creativity and reflection are highly necessary for success.

Sustainability encompasses many areas of an organization to include people, strategies, finances, and products (“Organizational”, n.d.). Leading sustainability really means knowing an organizations vision and needs and using that information to motivate others to reach those goals (Hargreaves & Fink, 2004). Someone who is a good sustainability leader is likely planning for the future, thinking ahead, and focusing on results (Hargreaves & Fink, 2004).

1. Diversity and sustainability have more of an internal focus. Diversity encourages creativity and allows new ideas to be incorporated into the organization (Maddux, 2013). Along with the desire for sustainability and an organization that keeps on going well into the future, diversity and sustainability are what allows an organization to take an inward reflection and develop a plan. Encouraging diversity will eventually allow for innovation (Hewlett, 2013), so it is better for an organization to embrace diversity and sustainability and the innovation and change will come later.
2. Diversity and sustainability revolve more around culture. Culture plays a crucial role in organizations for many different reasons (Lowe, n.d.), and diversity and sustainability both support organizational culture because both involve decisions that affect people and people are a critical part of an organization’s culture (Lowe, n.d.). Because of the importance of culture and the way both diversity and sustainability interact with culture, these two things would be more important than innovation and change.
3. Diversity and sustainability are based more on people. Diversity encourages opportunity and collaboration among peers and sustainability encourages out-of-the box thinking for future products and processes. Sustainability is focused on people because it means creating relationships that allow for more predictability in the future (Wookey, 2014). Because of an organizations dedication to sustainability and diversity, people become the focal point, which improves reputation as well as services and competitive advantage (Roberson & Park, 2006).

I found the effort to get rid of the criminal background question very interesting. If I were an employer I would like to know if any applicants have previous records, I would rather not chance hiring a sex offender and then having an increased risk of incidents in the work place. Doing away with the background check before the hiring seems counter productive (Travis & Crayton,2009). If the offender registries were handled by a more official organization and updated with accurate and reliable information it might solve this discrimination problem. The rate of diseases in the prison system is 4 to ten times higher in the prison system (Travis & Crayton,2009). I never realized the risk of disease being in the prison system was this high, one thing not addressed was if this was because of prison, or if it was due to the inmates actions prior to going to prison. This would be a difficult situation to try and address. Do we pay for the treatment of the diseases after the inmates get out of prison?
2.Identify and discuss any two issues that you found interesting in Chapter 72: Community Corrections.
The amount of people on probation was a very surprisingly large number, which was shocking to find upwards of 4 million on probation (Alarid, 2009). I have never taken the time to think about the individuals on probation but this is a very large number. The individuals on house arrest and such could be efficiently used for community service if there was a revamp to the community service system. I feel that community service is a very useful tool that little effort is being put into utilizing it to its fullest potential, and it seems as though there is no advancements towards the increase in community service line of rehabilitation with only 1 out of 4 individuals on probation doing any type of community service (Alarid, 2009). I think the wealthy get off too easily by paying their way out of doing community service, they should be held to the same standards as everyone else and have to do community service.

5 Corporate Self-Regulation and Ethics Programs: Challenges and Issues
According to the ethicist Lynn Paine in a Harvard Business Review article, a values-based approach in ethics programs should be more effective than a strict, rules-based compliance approach, since a values approach is grounded and motivated in personal self-governance.[93] Employees are more likely to be motivated to “do the right thing” than threatened if they violate laws and rules. A values-based stakeholder management approach assumes that corporations (owners and management) ought to intrinsically value the interests of all stakeholders.[94] In practice, this is not always the case.[95] Later studies suggest that both values-based and compliance ethics programs seem to work effectively together. Without values-based compliance, however, compliance and fear-based programs are less likely to succeed.[96] Responsible self-regulation in companies can enhance entrepreneurship and reduce unnecessary costs of too much bureaucratic control (e.g., it is estimated that the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act costs large public companies $16 million to implement). One study by the Open Compliance Ethics Group (OCEG) found that firms that had had an ethics program for 10 or more years did not have “reputational damage” during the last five years. Chapter 4 discussed in more detail ethics programs that include codes of ethical and legal conduct that are designed to help companies financially and legally. As noted there, the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations (FSGO) were established in 1984 by Congress—which passed a crime bill that instituted the U.S. Sentencing Commission. This commission, made up of federal judges, was empowered with sentencing those found in violation of the guidelines. In 1987, uniform guidelines were created for sentencing individuals in the federal courts. Some federal judges quit the bench in protest of the strictness of the guidelines and the sentences they were required to hand down. In 1991, the commission shifted the emphasis from individual wrongdoers to organizations that might be found guilty for the illegal actions of their employees. The 1991 revised guidelines threaten fines of up to $290 million to companies found guilty of violating the federal guidelines. However, those fines can be substantially reduced if an organization implements an “effective program to prevent and detect violations of law.” Companies that followed the requirements of the FSGO could find relief from lawsuits that resulted from one or more criminally motivated professionals.
